Iran President Ebrahim Raisi in helicopter incident: what we know
The crash coincides with a period of heightened tensions between Iran and its regional enemy Israel which has seen the two nations fighting this year.
A helicopter in the Iranian president’s three-vehicle convoy was involved in an accident on Sunday afternoon. According to Iranian state television, it is not yet clear if the vehicle involved was the one carrying Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi.
As confirmed by state television, a helicopter in the convoy suffered “a hard landing” due to bad weather conditions and rain. The incident happened near Jolfa, a city on the border with with the nation of Azerbaijan, 375 miles from the Iranian capital, Tehran. So far there is no additional information.
The Iranian president had travelled there to inaugurate the Qiz Qalasi dam with his Azeri counterpart Ilham Aliyev. The dam is the third dam to be built by the two nations on the Aras River.
