IRS 2025 tax filing season: key dates you can’t miss
Fresh off of the Christmas joy, attention turns to another fun time of year: taxes.
As the calendar flips to 2025, taxpayers across the United States brace themselves for another tax filing season. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has set several crucial dates that every taxpayer should mark on their calendar to ensure timely compliance and avoid penalties.
The tax filing season typically kicks off in late January when the IRS begins accepting tax returns. While the exact date for 2025 hasn’t been announced yet, taxpayers can expect it to be around January 29, based on previous years’ patterns
Federal tax returns are due Tuesday, 15 April.
Requesting an extension
Those seeking an extension can request it for free using the IRS’ Free File software. This action will push back the filing deadline to 15 October, 2025. Be aware that this extension only applies to submitting one’s return, not to any taxes owed to the IRS.
State filing deadlines to keep in mind
Some states have different filing deadlines, and one should also keep those dates in mind.
All other states that require residents to pay income tax have deadlines that align with those imposed at the federal level: 15 April. States typically offer extensions as well, and you should contact or visit the website of the relevant tax authority to request one.
Deadline to claim stimulus checks
Individuals wanting to claim the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit have until April 15, 2025 to file the required tax return. This tax credit was created as part of the federal government’s response to the covid-19 pandemic. It allows eligible taxpayers to claim the full amount of Economic Impact Payments or stimulus payments they were entitled to but did not receive.
