IRS Form 7004 tax extension: where to file the form and do I mail it?

Businesses that need more time to file certain income tax and other forms can use IRS Form 7004. Depending on the tax form it goes to a specific address.

Where to send IRS Form 7004 to get a tax filing extension for business filings

The Internal Revenue Service gives individuals and businesses until 18 April to file their tax forms and pay any taxes due. However, sometimes a little more time is needed but depending on what kind of filer you are, and the type of extension needed the IRS provides specific forms.

In the case of businesses that need an extension to report certain business income tax or information as well as other returns, they can use IRS Form 7004 “Application for Automatic Extension of Time To File Certain Business Income Tax, Information, and Other Returns” to request an automatic 6-month extension. The agency no longer informs the company that the extra time has been granted, but only contacts the applicant when the extension has been disallowed.

Depending on which form the company is requesting the extension for, the documents will need to be mailed to a different specific address. Below you’ll find further information on exactly where. However, the IRS also allows Form 7004 to be e-filed through the Modernized e-File (MeF) platform. Know that there are exceptions pertaining to certain foreign corporations as well as restrictions for certain applications for using the e-file method. The IRS provides a list of what Form 7004 cannot be used for via e-file.

Note that for the extensions that may be granted pertaining to information or forms it does not extend to the date pertaining to the type of taxes that must be paid. For filers who cannot pay on-time, the agency provides payment plans but they may still incur additional costs depending on what plan they choose.
