Is Netflix getting rid of the basic ad-free plans? This is what we know

Regions which have the ad-based subscription are going to have their basic subscriptions cut as the company rebounds from a disappointing 2023

Netflix has bounced back from declining subscription numbers with a very successful final quarter of 2023 with plans afoot to end basic add free plans.

Company executives reported that there had been a 70% increase in subscriptions for that final quarter, 13.1 million subscribers. The global subscriber total is now 247 million.

“The ads plan now accounts for 40% of all Netflix sign-ups in our ads markets and we’re looking to retire our Basic plan in some of our ads countries, starting with Canada and the UK in Q2 and taking it from there,” the earnings report said.

The basic plan was axed for “new or rejoining members” from July last year. Users in the UK and Canada will be the first to be shunted off of the basic plan, being moved to either the cheaper, ad-supported plan or the more expensive ad-free plan.

Though a timeframe has yet to be announced for the US, expect it to be this year.

How much are Netflix subscriptions?
