Update:

Millions of Americans are to receive their Social Security benefits check for August 2025 on a Wednesday. However, it won’t be this Wednesday.

When are Social Security checks paid in August 2025?

Every month, the U.S.’s Social Security Administration (SSA) sends out checks to over 70 million beneficiaries across a series of payment runs.

These beneficiaries include recipients of retirement benefits, disability insurance (SSDI) and survivor pay, who typically get their check on one of three Wednesdays each month.

But it is the second, third and fourth Wednesdays that are used as payment dates - not the first. In August, therefore, the SSA’s three-Wednesdays payment schedule doesn’t kick off until the 13th.

Each beneficiary’s designated Wednesday depends on the date of birth of the worker whose Social Security taxes have accumulated the benefits entitlement.

Weds. payment schedule - Aug. 2025:

  • Weds., Aug. 13: Recipients born on 1st and 10th
  • Weds., Aug. 20: Recipients born on 11th and 20th
  • Weds., Aug. 27: Recipients born on 21st and 31st

Are there any exceptions to the three-Wednesdays timeline?

Yes. There are some SSA beneficiaries who receive their checks outside the cycle outlined above:

  • Some long-term Social Security beneficiaries

If you began claiming retirement, SSDI or survivor benefits before May 1997, your check is typically issed on the third of each month, irrespective of your date of birth.

However, August’s check was paid a little earlier than usual. As the third was a Sunday, the distribution date was brought forward to the nearest working day, which was Friday 1.

  • SSI beneficiaries

Beneficiaries of Supplemental Security Income (SSI) - a separate SSA scheme for low-income individuals who are over 65 or have a disability - get their check on the first of each month (unless it’s a holiday or weekend day).

As a result, August’s SSI money was sent out on Friday 1.

  • Dual beneficiaries (SSI + regular Social Security)

Over 2.5 million people in the U.S. receive both SSI and one of the SSA’s retirement, SSDI or survivor benefits.

These recipients typically get the former on the first of each month and the latter on the third. But as August 3 was a Sunday, they received both on the first this month.

Non-Weds. recipients: Aug. 2025

  • SSI beneficiaries: Fri., Aug. 1
  • Pre-May 1997 Social Sec. beneficiaries: Fri., Aug. 1
  • Dual beneficiaries: SSI & Social Sec. paid on Fri., Aug. 1
