New Year’s Day is one of 11 federal holidays observed each year in the U.S. This means public offices and services will remain closed on Jan. 1, 2026. The measure applies to the United States Postal Service (USPS), which is a public institution.
USPS service schedule for Dec. 31, 2025
According to a holiday schedule published by the USPS, Post Office locations will be open on New Year’s Eve. Mail will be picked up from blue collection boxes, and regular mail will be delivered.

USPS service schedule for Jan. 1, 2026
On New Year’s Day, Post Office locations will be closed, the USPS says. Mail won’t be collected from blue boxes and regular deliveries won’t be made. Only mail that falls into the category of Priority Mail Express, a service that comes at an extra cost, will be delivered.
USPS operations will resume as normal on Friday, Jan. 2, 2026.
