Memorial Day falls on 29 May this year, and with it the unofficial start of the summer. The day for honoring and remembering US military personnel who have sacrificed their lives in the line of duty is a federal holiday which means that it won’t be a day of business as usual.

While some businesses will remain open, others will close to allow their employees to enjoy a long weekend to go on a road trip, have a barbecue or attend one of the commemoration events around the nation. Also, many federal, state and local government services may not be available such as garbage pickup.

For the first time, New York City will have compost, recycling and trash pickup during the holiday weekend after new collection schedule rules went into effect 1 April this year. You can check out the New York City Department of Sanitation pickup schedule at the government website.

That will be the case for several communities across the United States like Phoenix, Miami-Dade and Los Angeles. However, other communities will see service postponed by a day. If your trash removal service is handled by Waste Management (WM), you can check if the holiday will interrupt the trash pickup service in your area on their webpage.
