Is your Tesla spying on you? This is the company’s policy about users data and information

While the company touts its commitment to protecting user data, the extent of information gathered has sparked concerns about data misuse.

Tesla’s advanced technology and data collection practices have raised questions about privacy and security for vehicle owners. A report of 25 car brands studied by the Mozilla Foundation found 56% will share data with law enforcement in response to an informal request, while 84% share or sell personal data.

In short, it’s not safe to share personal information with your vehicle.

One company at the forefront of this is Tesla. The electric car company, whose creator is set to walk the halls of power, is one of the most data intensive car brands out there. For one, the company warns in its customer privacy notice that opting out of data collection may cause your vehicle to suffer “reduced functionality, serious damage, or inoperability”. In effect, you are forced to put your data at risk of exploitation.

Indeed, the same Mozilla report remarks that Tesla has a “questionable track record” with regards to data security.

Tesla’s data handling in more detail

Tesla vehicles are equipped with an array of sensors and cameras that collect a wide range of data, including:

  • Vehicle performance and health metrics
  • Driving behaviors (acceleration, braking, Autopilot usage)
  • Location information
  • Camera recordings (internal and external)
  • Infotainment system usage

The company states that most data processing occurs locally within the vehicle, and personally identifiable camera recordings are not continuously collected. However, Tesla’s privacy notice indicates they can collect substantial data about you and your car usage.

Despite these assurances, privacy advocates have raised several concerns. The potential for unauthorized surveillance through extensive video data collection has been noted, including incidents of Tesla employees sharing sensitive customer data between themselves.
