Many members of former President Donald Trump’s circle have already been subpoenaed and will appear in front of the panel. These include House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy as the panel wants to find out what he said to Trump on the day of the riot.
The first public hearing is scheduled for Thursday, June 9 at 8 p.m. ET. in the House Cannon Office Building. The meetings are not everyday however, with the following session on Monday, June 13 at 10 a.m. ET.
What happened on January 6?
On Wednesday, 6 January a pro-Trump mob marched from the White House towards Capitol Hill, overwhelmed the police and disrupted a Congressional session held to certify the electoral victory of President-elect Joe Biden. Members of Congress were sent into lockdown as the rioters broke into the chamber and ransacked offices.
The mob clashed with police and private security inside the Capitol which led to five total deaths. Congress now wants to hold those reponsible to accoutn and find out what, if any, role the Trump presidency played in the chaos.
How can proceedings be watched?
Pretty much every major news network will be following the committee sessions live as they happen, including ABC, CBS, CNN, and NBC/MSNBC.
It can also be viewed on the Select Committee’s YouTube channel.
However, America’s largest news channel Fox News will not be following the first session live. Instead, it will continue with its usual Tucker Carlson Show slot. Adam Kinzinger, one of two Republicans on the Senate committee accused Fox News of hiding the truth “if it disagrees with your narrative”.
Fox News has consistently attacked the panel as well as its description events of January 6. Some hosts described the attack as initiated by right-wing bogeyman Antifa (Anti-Fascist Action). The Republican party is expected to attack the committee as rigged.
Hillary Clinton remarked on Tuesday, “Fox News won’t air the January 6 hearings because they prefer their sedition made fresh on-site.”
