The congressional pan investigating the 6 January attack on the US Capitol will hold hearings throughout June that will drill into the details of what it says was a widespread plot led by former President Donald Trump to overturn the 2020 presidential election. In Thursday’s session, US Capitol Police Officer Caroline Edwards recalled how she was attacked, teargassed and knocked unconscious in scenes of chaos and carnage. “What I saw was just a war scene,” she said. “I couldn’t believe my eyes: There were officers on the ground bleeding. They were throwing up. I saw friends with blood all over their faces. I was slipping in people’s blood. I was catching people as they fell. It was carnage. It was chaos. I can’t even describe what I saw. Never in my wildest dreams did I think that as a police officer, as a law enforcement officer, I would find myself in the middle of a battle”.

Many members of Trump’s circle have already been subpoenaed and will appear in front of the panel. These include House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy as the panel wants to find out what he said to Trump on the day of the riot.

The first of several public hearings took place on Thursday 9 June - meetings will continue throughout June although not every day. The next session is on Monday 13 June, starting at at 10 am EDT / 7 am PDT. The committee will focus on Trump’s contention that his defeat by Democrat Joe Biden was due to unfounded allegations of election fraud, the so-called “Big Lie.” Another hearing has been scheduled for Wednesday 15 June at the same time.

What happened on 6 January 2021?

On Wednesday 6 January 2021, a pro-Trump mob marched from the White House towards Capitol Hill, overwhelmed the police and disrupted a Congressional session held to certify the electoral victory of President-elect Joe Biden. Members of Congress were sent into lockdown as the rioters broke into the chamber and ransacked offices.

The mob clashed with police and private security inside the Capitol which led to a total of five deaths. Congress now wants to hold those responsible to account and find out what, if any, role the Trump presidency played in the chaos.

How can proceedings be watched?

Pretty much every major news network will be following the committee sessions live as they happen, including ABC, CBS, CNN, and NBC/MSNBC.

It can also be viewed on the Select Committee’s YouTube channel.

Fox News has consistently attacked the panel as well as its description events of 6 January. Some hosts described the attack as initiated by right-wing bogeyman Antifa (Anti-Fascist Action). The Republican party is expected to attack the committee as rigged.

Last week, Hillary Clinton remarked, “Fox News won’t air the January 6 hearings because they prefer their sedition made fresh on-site.”

However, America’s largest news channel Fox News will not be providing live coverage - only major US news network not to. Adam Kinzinger, one of two Republicans on the Senate committee accused Fox News of hiding the truth “if it disagrees with your narrative”.
