The House Select Committee has spent over 10 months gathering testimony and evidence of the January 6 2021 assault on the US Capitol. After many deliberations, meetings and subpoenas, the public investigation will seek to nail down some answers and liability for the events that resulted in a mob desecrating the seat of American democracy.

On Thursday 9 June, the American public got its first view of what the panel has uncovered. An audience of over 20 million tuned in to watch the first primetime hearing by House of Representatives lawmakers. Over the next couple weeks the nine members of the committee will show how former President Trump was intimately involved in a widespread plot to reverse the legitimate 2020 election win of President Joe Biden along with his collaborators.

The House Select Committee plans to hold six hearings in total, brought to the American public live from the Cannon Caucus Room on all the major networks. The committee will focus on Trump’s contention that his defeat by Democrat Joe Biden was due to unfounded allegations of election fraud, the so-called “Big Lie.”

This week the panel will give in depth detail of Trump’s direct efforts to “corrupt the Department of Justice and his detailed planning with lawyer John Eastman to pressure the vice president, state legislatures, state officials and others to overturn the election,” Rep. Liz Cheney said.

The next session was set to take place Wednesday 15 June, but due to the time requirements for preparing the video evidence it has been postponed until Thursday 16 June starting at 1 pm ET / 10 am PT. Two more sessions are scheduled for next week on 21 and 23 June, both 1 pm ET / 10 am PT.

How can proceedings be watched?

Pretty much every major news network will be following the committee sessions live as they happen, including ABC, CBS, CNN, and NBC/MSNBC.

It can also be viewed on the Select Committee’s YouTube channel.

Fox News has consistently attacked the panel as well as its description events of 6 January and was the only network that didn’t broadcast the first primetime session. Adam Kinzinger, one of two Republicans on the Senate committee accused Fox News of hiding the truth “if it disagrees with your narrative”.

Some hosts described the attack as initiated by right-wing bogeyman Antifa (Anti-Fascist Action). The Republican party is expected to attack the committee as rigged.

What happened on 6 January 2021?

On Wednesday 6 January 2021, a pro-Trump mob marched from the White House towards Capitol Hill, overwhelmed the police and disrupted a Congressional session held to certify the electoral victory of then-President-elect Joe Biden. Members of Congress were sent into lockdown as the insurrectionists broke into the chamber and ransacked offices.

The mob clashed with police and private security inside the Capitol which led to the death of five officers. Congress now wants to hold those responsible to account and find out what, if any, role the Trump presidency played in the chaos.
