The House Select Committee to investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol will hold a surprise hearing on 28 June. The panel sixth session of witness testimony and laying out of evidence will begin at 1 pm ET.

The panel has not released the names of any witnesses for today, nor what the topic of today's session.

The House panel investigating the attack on the US Capitol announced a surprise hearing for Tuesday 28 June.  After the last session on 23 June, there weren't supposed to be anymore hearings until sometime in July.

January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol: how many people have been charged, sentenced and jailed?

It’s been around a year since the Democratic-led U.S. House of Representatives select committee began its investigation into attack on the US Capitol, which took place on 6 January 2021. Witnesses have been interviewed, and countless documents have been compiled leading us into the public hearings which began on Thursday 9 June 2022.

There have already been nearly 850 people arrested for crimes related to the attack on the Capitol, including more than 250 charged with assaulting or impeding law enforcement. Over those, about 90 have been charged with using a deadly or dangerous weapon or causing serious bodily injury to an officer.

What was Trump’s seven-part plan to overturn the 2020 election?

When the US House of Representatives Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack convened for the first of what were supposed to be six planned public hearings on 9 June and the proceedings were aired in primetime television. 

In that hearing the select committee examined the events that took place in the first week of 2021, which culminated in a violent protest at the US Capitol that resulted in five deaths, directly and indirectly, over 700 arrests and criminal charges being brought against 225 people who took part in what then-President Elect Joe Biden described as “an insurrection.”

Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol: What are the main objectives of the House Select Committee?

The House Select Committee on Investigating the January 6th insurrection has two audiences they are trying to reach. One is the wider American public and the other the US Justice Department.

The proceedings will try to show that there was a concerted effort by former President Trump and his collaborators to overturn Joe Biden’s presidential victory both through lies and when that failed violence. The Republicans have already tried to undercut the validity of the panel which has been investigating the events that saw the United States come close to losing its democracy.

On Monday afternoon the House Select Committee to Investigate the Attack on the US Capitol announced that it would hold a surprise hearing. The sixth session presenting testimony and evidence will begin at 1 pm ET 28 June.

Unlike previous sessions, the list of witnesses and what is expected to be presented was not divulged beforehand only that the panel had new evidence to present to the American public. 

The bipartisan House Select Committee is composed of nine members, seven Democrats and two Republicans, with each member leading a different hearing. Over the course of the previous five hearings the panel has been laying out in a clear and precise manner the facts they have uncovered during the past 11 months of investigations.
