Japan begins work on what could become the world’s first blended-wing commercial airliner that looks straight out of science fiction

Japan Airlines has invested in JetZero to help develop the Z4, a 250-passenger aircraft capable of flying nearly 6,200 miles while cutting fuel consumption by as much as 50%.

Japan Airlines has invested in aircraft manufacturer JetZero to support the development of a futuristic passenger jet that could reduce fuel consumption by up to 50%. Unlike conventional airliners, which feature a tube-shaped fuselage with wings attached to the sides, the Z4 uses a blended-wing-body design that seamlessly merges the wings and fuselage into a single structure.

The Z4 is currently JetZero’s flagship project. Designed to carry around 250 passengers on medium- and long-haul routes, the company says its aerodynamic shape could reduce fuel burn by between 30% and 50% compared with today’s conventional commercial aircraft by significantly lowering drag.

Japan Airlines has not yet revealed what the Z4’s cabin will look like or how much space passengers will have, although it has released a rendering showing the aircraft’s exterior design. According to the airline, the aircraft is expected to have a range of approximately 6,165 miles (9,920 kilometers), enough to operate long-haul routes, including flights between Tokyo and the U.S. West Coast.

The aircraft’s blended-wing-body configuration allows the fuselage to become part of the wing itself, meaning virtually the entire aircraft generates lift rather than relying primarily on the wings alone.

That is a major departure from traditional airliners, where the wings provide most of the lift while the fuselage mainly adds weight and aerodynamic drag. The trade-off is that blended-wing aircraft are naturally less stable and require highly sophisticated flight-control systems. Those technological challenges have made the concept difficult to bring to commercial aviation for decades.
