It was Mother’s Day on Sunday, March 10, and to mark the occasion J.K. Rowling posted a tweet that generated controversy for appearing to troll inclusive language and trans activists.

“Happy Birthing Parent Day to all whose large gametes were fertilised resulting in small humans whose sex was assigned by doctors making mostly lucky guesses,” she wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

The post seemingly alluded to “woke” or inclusive language like the term “birthing parent” which is used by some quarters to refer to the mother.

After receiving backlash and criticism that she was deriding people through her post, she added a follow-up tweet that took on a sarcastic tone.

Devastated and bewildered that my embrace of inclusive language has angered its most enthusiastic devotees, so let’s just say: Happy Mother’s Day to all females who’ve raised children.”

Hours later, she responded to a post that criticized her message by writing, “I don’t know. You embrace ‘inclusive’ language, parrot their beliefs, and it makes them angrier than ever.”

Rowling’s posts have had a polarizing effect on the platform, with comments and posts by people taking her side or the opposite view.

Her supporters cheered her on and called her “queen” and “hero”, while others bemoaned what they called her “intolerance” and her mockery of a sector that already receives a lot of hate and discrimination.

It’s unfortunate that the author chose to post a message that served to divide the internet on this day of celebration, instead of simply wishing all mothers well on their special day.

Rowling has made comments offensive to the trans community since 2020, and has grabbed the headlines more in the past few years for her stance on trans women than for her recent works.
