Update:

How important is a full head of hair to a 48-year-old man? For WWE superstar John Cena, it’s more important than you might think.

In a recent interview with People, the wrestler turned Hollywood icon opened up about his hair transplant journey, a choice influenced by fans who frequently pointed out his growing baldness.

Fans pushed ‘bald John Cena’ to act

“As I tried to hide my hair loss, the audience was bringing it to light,” Cena explained. “I saw signs that said ‘The bald John Cena.’ They pushed me to explore my options.”

Cena shared his frustration with the stigma around hair loss. “If there wasn’t so much shame around it, I’d have gotten it done 10 years ago. I thought I was alone, but seven or eight out of 10 men suffer from thinning or baldness,” he said, adding, “If somebody’s going to sweat me for that, I don’t think there’s any shame in it.”

Hair transplant data shows growing acceptance

Is there really shame around hair restoration today? Data from the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) suggests otherwise. Hair transplant procedures continue to grow significantly, with an increasing number of women also seeking permanent solutions for thinning hair.

According to the ISHRS’ 2022 Practice Census, hair transplant surgeries increased by 10% from 2016. However, the 2025 Practice Census showed an even bigger jump, a 20% rise in patients over the last three years.

Current trends in hair restoration

Among the notable trends:

  • A 16.5% increase in women seeking permanent hair loss solutions
  • A 13% increase in body hair transplants for men
  • A 17% increase in body hair transplants for women

Patients typically pursue hair transplants to feel more attractive, prepare for upcoming events, or appear younger and competitive in the workplace, the recent Practice Census found. For John Cena, the desire to look younger and boost confidence played a key role.

Hair transplant “completely changed” John Cena’s life

“A different hairstyle can identify a part that can get me more work, do the thing I love to do,” Cena said.

From the outside, the 14-time WWE champion seemed to be thriving. But the hair transplant has given Cena a new level of confidence. “It’s completely changed the course of my life,” he admitted.
