Johnny Depp’s net worth: how much money has the actor made?
Johnny Depp, one of Hollywood’s biggest stars, has faced serious financial challenges over the last few decades.
Actor Johnny Depp, best known for his roles in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Sweeny Todd, is facing a new trial… literally.
After Depp was accused of domestic violence and spousal abuse, he found himself at the center of a media frenzy during the trial between him and his ex-wife Amber Heard. Depp has brought a $50 million defamation suit against Heard, challenging her accusations of abuse. In response to Depp’s claims, Heard has filed her own $100 million defamation suit, which will also be decided on during the trial.
The suit results from a 2018 article written by Heard for the Washington Post, where she claims that she was the victim of emotional and physical abuse. While Depp was never mentioned by name, his lawyers have made it clear to the jury that the article was written to defame the star.
Johnny Depp’s long career in Hollywood
Since his teenage years, Johnny Depp has been an icon in Hollywood, and his time in the industry has earned him millions. From just the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, he has reportedly earned more than $300 million. Since Heard’s accusations became public, Depp has not stared in many films.
Depp was set to star in the film adaptations of JK Rowling’s “Fantastic Beasts,” but once the accusations came out, he was dropped by Warner Brothers. However, due to the terms of the contract signed by both parties, the production company still had to pay him $16 million.
Depp filed a lawsuit against The Management Group, a business management firm, the owner of which Joel Mandel had up until 2016 been a long-time friend of Depp’s. The vast majority of Depp’s wealth had been lost between 2003 and 2013. The Rolling Stone reported that legal documents included claims that “Depp’s sister Christi was given $7 million and his assistant, Nathan Holmes, $750,000, without his knowledge, and that he has paid the IRS more than $5.6 million in late fees.” The suit was valued at $25 million and acused the firm of “gross mismanagement and, at times, outright fraud.”
In the end, both sides settled, the details of which were never released. When the settlement was announced, Depp’s statement read that the actor stands “determined to take firm action to protect his personal and artistic reputation in the interests of his family and his career.”
Sepp’s net worth is estimated to be around $150 million. Should Amber Heard win her defamation suit against Depp, that figure could drop substantially.
