Johnny Depp’s net worth: how much money has the actor made?

The Hollywood star has been awarded $15 million in the court case against Amber Heard, so how much could he now be worth after decades in the film industry?

How much is Johnny Depp worth?

A court in Virginia ruled in favour of Johnny Depp on all three counts brought by his legal team, alleging that the actor had been defamed by ex-wife Amber Heard. As part of the ruling, Depp was awarded $15 million in compensation, while Heard’s countersuit was awarded $2 million.

Heard appears likely to appeal the verdict and will almost certainly appeal the compensatory figures given by the jury. However it seems very likely that Depp will receive a substantial payment as a result of the case, to add to his already-huge personal wealth.

Celebrity Net Worth estimates that the 58-year-old has a total net worth of around $150 million, and that figure does not include the compensation payments.

Why has Depp been awarded $15 million in court?

After Depp was accused of domestic violence and spousal abuse, he found himself at the center of a media frenzy during the trial between him and his ex-wife Amber Heard. Depp brought a $50 million defamation suit against Heard, challenging her accusations of abuse. In response to Depp’s claims, Heard filed her own $100 million defamation suit.

The suit stems from a 2018 article written by Heard for the Washington Post, where she claimed that she was the victim of emotional and physical abuse. While Depp was never mentioned by name, his lawyers insisted the article was written to defame the star.

On Wednesday, 1 June the jury ruled in favour of Depp on all three counts brought. Heard’s countersuit was successful on one claim.

Johnny Depp’s long career in Hollywood

Since his teenage years, Johnny Depp has been an icon in Hollywood, and his time in the industry has earned him millions. From just the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, he has reportedly earned more than $300 million. Since Heard’s accusations became public, Depp has not stared in many films.

Depp was set to star in the film adaptations of JK Rowling’s “Fantastic Beasts,” but once the accusations came out, he was dropped by Warner Brothers. However, due to the terms of the contract signed by both parties, the production company still had to pay him $16 million.

Depp filed a lawsuit against The Management Group, a business management firm, the owner of which Joel Mandel had up until 2016 been a long-time friend of Depp’s. The vast majority of Depp’s wealth had been lost between 2003 and 2013. The Rolling Stone reported that legal documents included claims that “Depp’s sister Christi was given $7 million and his assistant, Nathan Holmes, $750,000, without his knowledge, and that he has paid the IRS more than $5.6 million in late fees.” The suit was valued at $25 million and acused the firm of “gross mismanagement and, at times, outright fraud.”

In the end, both sides settled, the details of which were never released. When the settlement was announced, Depp’s statement read that the actor stands “determined to take firm action to protect his personal and artistic reputation in the interests of his family and his career.”
