José Manuel Felices, doctor: “Emotional state matters a great deal, especially when it comes to sticking with treatment”
After the publication of his book ‘X‑ray of a Healthy Life: Discover the Science Behind Health and Happiness’, Felices spoke to AS.

Recovery from an illness or injury isn’t driven solely by medical treatment. Dr. José Manuel Felices emphasizes that a person’s immediate environment plays a decisive role. “Your emotional state matters a great deal, especially when it comes to sticking with treatment,” he tells AS, referring to a patient’s ability to follow through when the process becomes long or complicated.
When treatments are demanding - like rehab after a major injury - support can be a difference‑maker. “If I have people around me who encourage me, it’s going to be much easier to show up for those sessions and put in the work,” says the author of X‑ray of a Healthy Life: Discover the Science Behind Health and Happiness. The difficulty doesn’t go away, but it becomes far more manageable when you’re not facing it alone.
The same holds true for more serious illnesses. “If I have to go through chemotherapy sessions and someone accompanies me, it’s always going to feel more manageable,” he explains. Being able to share discomfort, side effects, or fear eases the emotional load and reinforces consistency.
A community‑based view of health
That support system also improves communication with medical professionals. “I’m going to be able to express how I’m feeling, and that makes it much easier to keep up with treatment,” he notes. Adherence - crucial in any therapeutic process - is built both inside and outside the doctor’s office.
Felices argues for a view of health that is less individualistic and more community‑driven. “Having a strong circle of people who accompany me” isn’t just emotional backup; it’s a genuine therapeutic factor. Healing, he concludes, isn’t only about medication, exercises, or medical guidelines. It’s also about feeling supported, accompanied, and carried through difficult moments. And in that process, the people surrounding the patient become an essential part of the treatment itself.
