As the 2024 presidential race enters its final stretch, Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump are gearing up for a busy Labor Day weekend. With just over two months until Election Day, every appearance, speech, and campaign stop will be scrutinized for its potential impact on the race. Neither candidate has been campaigning since Thursday.

Both campaigns are clearly prioritising the battleground states, particularly the “Blue Wall” states of Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania. These states, which flipped back from Republican to Democrat in 2020, are seen as crucial for both candidates’ paths to victory in November which will be decided by the swing-states which are very tight in polling.

Kamala Harris and Democrat plans

Vice President Harris, the Democratic nominee, has outlined an ambitious schedule for the holiday. Her day will begin in Detroit, Michigan, a crucial battleground state that played a pivotal role in the 2020 election. From there, Harris will jet to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, for another rally. This Pittsburgh event is particularly noteworthy as it will mark Harris’ first joint campaign appearance with President Joe Biden since she secured the Democratic nomination.

The Harris campaign is deploying a coordinated strategy across key swing states. Her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, will be stumping in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, while Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff heads to Newport News, Virginia.

Republican efforts more subdued

Former President Trump’s Labor Day schedule appears less active. As of the latest reports, Trump’s campaign has no public events for the holiday. This lower-profile approach for Labor Day comes on the heels of a busy week for Trump, who held a rally in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, on the Friday before Labor Day and visited Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania in quick succession in the preceding days.

Trump’s running mate, Senator JD Vance, also seems to be taking a more subdued approach to the holiday, with no public events announced.

While it would not have been anticpated with the lack of events, the party is in damage-control mode after Trump’s Arlington controversy.
