The United States Geological Institute has activated the red alert for civil aviation following the eruption of Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano, considered one of the most active on the planet. The eruption began at 4:45 a.m. local time or 10:45 a.m. ET.

Activity is maintained within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, after a fissure remains active in the southwest wall of the caldera, which generates lava flows on the surface of the crater floor.

Active and destructive

Located in a closed area of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Kilauea is one of the world's most active volanoes.

In 2019, a string of earthquakes and major eruption at Kilauea led to the destruction of hundreds of homes and businesses.

Eruption of Kilauea volcano in Hawaii

The Kilauea volcano on Hawaii's Big Island erupted early on Wednesday morning and lava flows are currently confined to the surrounding crater floor, said the US Geological Survey.

Kilauea last erupted in January, with activity stretching into March, the USGS says. The organization's Hawaiian Volcano Observatory detected a glow in Kilauea summit webcam images on Wednesday, indicating a new eruption.

The USGS said it is elevating Kilauea's aviation color code from orange to red as it evaluates the eruption.
