Kylie Kelce shares a parenting technique that’s making waves: How she plans to control her kids’ cell phone use

For those of us raising children, figuring out the right time to give them a mobile phone, and setting rules for how and when they can use it, can feel like an especially tough parenting challenge.

It’s a dilemma Kylie Kelce, wife of former NFL star Jason Kelce, has already put some thought into. With four daughters under the age of five, the Kelces haven’t had to deal with it just yet, but they’ve already mapped out a plan for when the time comes.

Kylie, host of the “Not Gonna Lie with Kylie Kelce” podcast, discussed the topic in the latest episode during a conversation with guest Kelly Ripa.

Kylie Kelce’s ‘kitchen phone’

“I actually believe that we will be doing what I’m calling the ‘kitchen phone,’” Kelce revealed.

“In other words, there will be one or two extra cellphones, besides Mom and Dad’s, that they’ll take with them if they’re going somewhere without a parent, or if they need to get a hold of us, or if they’re at something sports-related.”

Of course, as many parents know, most kids eventually want more than just a phone they can use outside the house. Kelce has a rule for that, too.

One phone, one rule: “It stays on the first floor”

“You can still have your friends have that phone number. You can still use the phone on the first floor of the house, but they live in the kitchen. They’re not going upstairs. They’re not going in the basement. They’re going nowhere but the first floor.”

That may be easier said than done, as some listeners pointed out in the comments on various platforms. Still, others say they’ve had success with similar strategies. As always, no two teenagers are the same, so what works for one family might not work for another.
