Lawrence O’Donnell doesn’t hold back on Donald Trump’s UN speech: “Out of control ignorance and incompetence”
US President Trump addressed the UN General Assembly on Tuesday and criticized European allies over green energy, immigration and other issues.
Lawrence O’Donnell is an American television anchor, political commentator, author, screenwriter, and producer and is best known as the host of the MSNBC opinion and news program, “The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell,” which airs on weeknights.
Following President Trump’s address to the United Nations General Assembly in September 2025, O’Donnell commented on the speech from his show, The Last Word. His commentary focused less on the specific content of the speech and more on the broader context surrounding the Trump administration.
O’Donnell slams Trump
The political analyst suggested that while Trump was speaking to the world’s leaders, everyone listening was aware of the criminal investigation into his former border czar, Tom Homan. He claimed that this underlying scandal, which involves a $50,000 cash bribe from undercover FBI agents, was the real story and that Trump’s administration was trying to cover it up.
O’Donnell used the Homan probe to argue that Trump’s actions were defined by a “turbulent sea of governmental chaos, confusion, and lawlessness.” He implied that Trump’s speech to the UN was an attempt to distract from a growing list of scandals.
O’Donnell has also frequently highlighted what he sees as Trump’s irrelevance in international affairs. He has pointed to leaders like Vladimir Putin and Benjamin Netanyahu as “proving every day how irrelevant Donald Trump is to their calculations,” citing their disregard for his warnings and deadlines. He has previously argued that this makes Trump “fully humiliated on the world stage.”
