Whether the tiny home trend is a rejection of modern consumerist culture or a way many are attempting to deal with the ever-increasing cost of housing, many have made the jump.

According to the Census Bureau, the median sales price of new homes sold in the US this year has hovered around $412,300. These high prices and mortgage rates, nearly triple those offered just a few years ago, have made it much harder for first-time buyers to compete in the market.

However, some are looking towards a subset of the market, where, by and large, prices are much more affordable. The average price for a manufactured home in May 2023 was $121,000, highlighting how these homes are a more affordable option for those looking to exit the rental market. Since May 2019, the average price has increased by 54 percent, showing that, like standard homes, these are investments whose value ebbs and flows.

That’s why some Americans are turning to other options, such as prefabricated units, which can be purchased for tens of thousands of dollars on Amazon and at retail stores like Walmart. There are plenty of models listed on Walmart’s website, though many appear to be sheds or small structures that would be built on a property rather than serving as an standalone home.

The tiny home now available at Walmart

Earlier this year, TikTok user Jeff Bryant went viral when he shared how he purchased a tiny house on Amazon for just $26,000. Bryant shared a tour of the unit, which, according to the video description, was put together in 27 minutes by five people.

Now, that home can be found at Walmart for as little as $15,900. It’s a 19-by-20-foot expandable manufactured home from Chery Industrial. According to the retailer’s website, it’s delivered on a flatbed truck and requires a forklift to unload.

This “tiny house” includes a bedroom, living room, bathroom, dining room, and kitchen and is ready to be furnished.

Though this home is far less expensive than the national average, there are costs to consider, including the purchase or rent of land to build it on, the forklifts needed to unload it, and the installation of appliances. Additionally, the site recommends pouring concrete over the legs for added stability.
