Massive bank closures coming soon in the United States: All branches will close in May
Bank of America, Chase, Wells Fargo and more banks will close all their branches in the United States for Memorial Day in May.
Banks in the United States, including Bank of America, Chase, and Wells Fargo, will close all their branches next month. Locations will remain closed for 24 hours on Monday, May 25, in observance of Memorial Day.
The list of banks closing on Monday, May 25 for the Memorial Day holiday includes Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Chase, Goldman Sachs, Citibank, U.S. Bank, SunTrust Bank, Morgan Stanley, Truist Bank, PNC Bank, Capital One, Citizens Bank, Santander Bank, and Compass.
Nearly all banks will be closed during this holiday, so it is recommended that you check with your nearest branch in advance to plan any payments or transactions.
When will banks reopen after the May 25 closure?
All locations will resume services the following day, Tuesday, May 26.
Although most large and small banks will be closed for Memorial Day, online banking and ATM transactions will remain available.
Customers can complete most everyday banking tasks. However, it is important to keep in mind that if you schedule payments on a federal holiday, processing may not begin until the next business day when banks reopen.
Other dates when banks in the United States will be closed
Banks in the country close on all 11 official federal holidays. Financial institutions rely on services involving the Federal Reserve. Since the Federal Reserve is closed on these holidays, banks are unable to operate and also close.
Of the 11 federally recognized holidays, some occur on fixed dates while others change each year. If a holiday falls on a weekend, it may be observed on a different day. If it falls on a Saturday, it is observed on the preceding Friday; if it falls on a Sunday, it is observed on the following Monday.
In 2026, banks have already closed for New Year’s Day on January 1, Martin Luther King Jr. Day on January 19, and Presidents’ Day on February 16. Here are the remaining holidays when banks will be closed:
- Memorial Day (last Monday in May): May 25, 2026
- Juneteenth: June 19, 2026
- Independence Day (observed): July 3, 2026 (the holiday falls on July 4, but in 2026 it is observed the day before because it falls on a Saturday)
- Labor Day (first Monday in September): September 7, 2026
- Columbus Day (second Monday in October): October 12, 2026
- Veterans Day: November 11, 2026
- Thanksgiving Day (fourth Thursday in November): November 26, 2026
- Christmas Day: December 25, 2026
