Midterm primary elections: Which states will vote on Aug 9, 2022?

More primaries are coming up this week to determine candidates for the November midterm elections. Find out what people are voting on Tuesday.

The November midterm elections are drawing closer, with Democrats expected to suffer big losses. The incumbent party typically loses seats during midterm elections but President Biden’s low approval ratings suggest that the Democrats may face a significant backlash. The passing in the Senate of the Inflation Reduction Act could offer a glimmer of hope for the Dems.

But before we can look too closely at the likely outcomes of the midterm elections, the states must conduct their primary races to determine who is on the ballot come November. The next batch of midterm primaries comes on Tuesday, 9 August, with four states holding elections that day.

Connecticut

A potential governor rematch is on the cards between Bob Stefanowksi and Govneror Ned Lamont. The two faced off in the 2018 midterms in which Lamont, the Democrat choice, defeated Stefanowksi.

The state will also be host to the Republican Senate primary to challenge the Democrat incumbent, Richard Blumethal. The three names on the ballot are Themis Klarides, former Minority Leader of the local House, RNC member Leora Levy and Peter Lumaj.

Minnesota

Scott Jensen has received the backing of the Republican party for the the governor’s race. The former state senator will face off against incumbent Democrat Tim Walz.

Vermont

The only member of Vermont’s representation in the House of Representatives, Peter Welch, is stepping down to challenge for the Senate seat being vacated by Patrik Leahy, who is retiring. Welch leads a number of other Democrats for the seat.

The Republican primary will take place for the position of governor. Incumbent Phil Scott is expected to win.

Wisconsin

Republican Senator Ron Johnson can expect to face Mandela Barnes in the fall after the latters main opponents pulled out.

In the Republican primary for governor, the two main contenders are the former Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch and Tim Michels. The former is supported by Mike Pence while the latter by Donald Trump, making the winner a good measure for the strength of the Trumpian wing of the GOP.The winner will face Democrat Governor Tiny evers
