The space agency is aiming to break into the rather cramped streaming market with its own version. Is it up to the challenge?

NASA, the US space agency, rolled-out the latest update to its app. The biggest change is the introduction of its new streaming service named NASA+.

There are no ads and no subscription fees; the totally free service aims to make it easier for users to access its documentaries, animated series, as well as live streams of future launches.

“NASA is a leader in the federal government for creating inspirational content that meets people where they are,” said NASA Deputy Administrator Pam Melroy.

What to watch on NASA+

The full roster of future programmes has not yet been revealed, but the agency teased a selection of programmes available at launch:

  • A documentary series following the James Webb Space Telescope's images as well as a series on the development of the powerful telescope
  • Animated children's shows delve into planets and the universe
  • A series investigating contributions of Black astronauts
  • Ultra-high-definition cosmic visuals accompanied by a spaced-out soundtrack, a la lofi hip-hop streams on YouTube
  • Spanish-language content includes a series on Hispanic and Latino NASA employees.

How to download

The streaming service is available to download on the major platforms via the NASA App on iOS and Android devices. Streaming players Roku and Apple TV also feature NASA+.
