NASA’s Artemis I launch: what time is it, where to follow and how to watch the mission to the Moon online
NASA’s first mission to the Moon in 50 years has been delayed on several occasions. The space agency plans to give it another shot on Wednesday 16 November.
The last time a US spacecraft managed to reach the Moon was in 1972. It was the Apollo 17 mission. 50 years later, NASA has plans for a new moon landing, this time with the Artemis I mission. The launch is scheduled to happen, if there is no other unforeseen delays, Wednesday 16 November.
It is an uncrewed flight, which includes the Space Launch System Rocket and the Orion spacecraft. This is the first step of the Artemis Program, whose objective is to resume trips to the Moon and establish a colony on the surface and in lunar orbit; as well as putting the first woman and the first black person on the Moon, but not before 2025.
This is not the first time that the American agency has tried to launch the mission. Already last August they were forced to abort the mission due to a series of technical failures. Last September the same thing happened, this time due to weather conditions. So they decided to postpone the launch to Monday 14 November. But the arrival of a tropical storm has meant that the mission will finally go ahead on Wednesday.
NASA’s Artemis I launch date and time
The next attempt will take place on Wednesday 16 November, at 01:04 am EST. That is the time at which the launch window opens. NASA will offer a special live broadcast one hour before liftoff from the Kennedy Space Center. However, the launch will depend on weather conditions and could be postponed depending on them.
