National Day of Mourning on Jan. 9: Is it a federal holiday? What businesses will be closed for Jimmy Carter’s funeral?
Biden has declared a National Day of Mourning for Thursday, when Jimmy Carter’s state funeral will be held, affecting some business operations.
The longest living US president, Jimmy Carter, passed away on December 29 at the age of 100 at his home in Plains, Georgia. President Joe Biden issued an executive order declaring a National Day of Mourning and for flags to be flown at half-staff at all public buildings and US military posts and naval vessels for thirty days following Carter’s death.
A state funeral will be held for the 39th US president at the Washington National Cathedral in Washington DC on Thursday, January 9th which Biden has also declared a National Day of Mourning.
Just as with the passing of George HW Bush in 2018, the day will be treated like a federal holiday, meaning that most government employees will have the day off and most financial markets will be closed. However, private businesses are not required to closed but some may do so.
These places will be closed on Thursday, January 9
Most notably, the United States Postal Service offices and retail services will be closed on Thursday in observance of the National Day of Mourning along with all federal offices. Only essential federal employees will be on the job.
As well, the USPS mail processing facilities will continue to accept and process volume mail from commercial mailers and there will be limited package delivery on Thursday according to Axios. The limited service operations are “to ensure the organization does not experience any impacts to its package delivery operations that may negatively affect customers or business partners,” stated the USPS.
Additionally, US stock markets, including the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq, will largely be shut down on Thursday. However, the bond market will have reduced hours, closing early at 2 pm ET. On the other hand, most banks will remain open.
Public schools for the most part will have classes as usual. Many are expected to observe a minute of silence to coincide with the commencement of the public memorial for Carter in Washington DC. It is scheduled to begin at 10 am ET.
