Doughnuts are a big part of American culture, with more than 200 million people consuming the ring-shaped pastry each year. With such popularity, it was bound to get a special holiday with which to celebrate it.
National Doughnut Day is celebrated each year on the first Friday of June, and this year, that falls on June 7.
The holiday was established more than eighty years ago in 1938 in Chicago, to celebrate the so-called “Donut Lassies” of the Salvation Army. These women were volunteers who joined the front lines to provide soldiers with clothes, supplies, and, eventually... doughnuts. The Lassies thought to make the men the sweet pieces of fried dough to give those who were fighting a taste of home.

Krispy Kreme is honoring this special day in the best way possible- by offering their customers a free doughnut of their choice, except for special or limited edition doughnuts. No purchase is necessary to receive the free treat.
If one doughnut is not enough for you, the chain is also offering its clients a chance to buy a dozen original glazed for only two dollars. All you need to do to qualify for the offer is buy any dozen at participating Krispy Kreme locations.
Dunkin’ National Donut Day deal
Dunkin’ is also celebrating the holiday by giving their customers a free classic doughnut of their choice on Friday. You can receive the freebie with a purchase of any beverage to go with your treat.
Tim Hortons
If you have signed up for the Tims Rewards loyalty program, you can get a free doughnut with any drink purchase. It’s the perfect time to try their limited-edition beverages such as the Cookie Butter Cold Brew and Cookie Butter Iced Capp.
Duck Donuts
Cinnamon lovers will enjoy Duck Donuts’ giveaway for the day. If you head to their nearest location, you can get a free cinnamon sugar doughnut on June 7. You don’t need to purchase anything, but you do have to claim your gift in the store.
Shipley Do-Nuts
The doughnut and coffee house chain will be giving away a free glazed doughnut with any purchase. Offer is available at participating locations.
Sheetz
Sheetz convenience stores give clients three days to celebrate. You can get a free donut from Friday to Sunday, June 7-9, when you purchase any Sheetz Bros coffee or ready-to-drink coffee at major mid-Atlantic gas stations, restaurants and their convenience chain locations. Use the Sheetz app to take advantage of the deal.
Taco John’s
Members of the chain’s rewards program can get free Mexican doughnut bites on Friday with any purchase in-app or in-store. To take advantage of the deal, members must have enrolled and downloaded the restaurant’s app by June 6.
7-Eleven
7-Eleven offers loyalty members a glazed doughnut for only $1 Friday at its convenience stores as well as Speedway and Stripes locations.
