Need a turkey for Thanksgiving? This is where you can find it for free in NY

Thanksgiving is just around the corner and families across the United States will be looking forward to gathering together to share their blessings over a holiday meal. However, times have been tough for some, which can make it difficult to afford getting their hands on the star of meal, let alone other mainstays of a Thanksgiving feast.

However, there are organizations that are pitching in to ensure that those in need can also put a hot Thanksgiving meal on their table. Here are places around New York City that will be handing out free turkeys and other food ahead of the holiday.

And even if you don’t need one yourself and are in a position to lend a helping hand you can consider volunteering or opening up your pocketbook to share your own blessings.

Need a turkey for Thanksgiving? This is where you can find it for free in NY

The following locations listed below will be giving away free turkeys and in some cases the fixings to go along with it. If you need other staples for your Thanksgiving meal, you can also check with local food banks and food pantries, many of which give out free food for Thanksgiving.

You can search for one near you using Feeding America’s food bank locator tool on its website. New York City has one as well to find a locations that are offering free food.

Gardiner Foundation Turkey Giveaway

You will have to register for this annual turkey giveaway and it’s first come, first serve. Simply scan the QR code in the Gardiner Foundation Turkey Giveaway flyer and go from there. As of last week, there were still tickets available.

Goke Food Pantry

Goke Food Pantry is looking to beat the number of free turkeys handed out last year raising the bar to 1,000. You can check out the organization’s website for more details.

Harlem Grown’s Thanksgiving Drive

Harlem Grown will hand out free meal kits to community members during its Thanksgiving Drive that will include “a frozen turkey, traditional thanksgiving sides, and we’ll have fresh produce to go around.” You are encouraged to stop by their Farm Stand to receive more information on how to register.

The National Action Network

The National Action Network founded by Reverand Al Sharpton will once again this year be giving back to the community in NYC. Stop by the NAN House of Justice to receive a free turkey, while supplies last.

Other turkey giveaways sponsored by New York politicians

Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, NY Sen. Jessica Scarcella-Spanton, Assemblyman Alec Brook-Krasny & Councilman Jautin Brannan will be handing out free turkeys in association with Coney Island boardwalk businesses on Tuesday, November 19, 11:00 am. They can be picked up at Ruby’s Bar & Grill, 1213 Rigelmann Boardwalk, Coney Island.

NY Senator Jessica Ramos and her team will be handing out free frozen turkeyson Wednesday, November 20, 6:00 pm. There will be a limited number of kosher and halal ones available too. As well you can enjoy a hot meal, and music from the High School for Arts & Business Jazz Band at 40-10 99th St, Corona.

NY State Assemblywoman Jenifer Rajkumar will be handing out free turkeys at 83-91 Woodhaven Blvd, Woodhaven on Saturday, November 23, 2:00 – 4:00 pm.
