Neither geraniums nor lavender: the plant you should put in your home to repel cockroaches
One common herb does more than flavor your meals. Its powerful scent can help drive cockroaches out of your home naturally.
As temperatures rise, so does the appearance of one of the least welcome household pests: cockroaches. Spotting one outside is unpleasant enough, but the real problem begins when one slips under a cabinet or appliance and makes itself at home.
Lemon, bay leaves, lavender and peppermint are among the many natural remedies people use to keep cockroaches away. But one of the most effective options is also a staple in many American kitchens. Not only can it help repel these unwanted pests, but it’s also prized for its culinary and medicinal uses.
Basil is a natural cockroach repellent
Basil is one of nature’s most effective cockroach deterrents. The reason has nothing to do with folklore. It’s all about chemistry.
Cockroaches have poor eyesight and rely heavily on their antennae, which function as highly sensitive chemical and scent detectors. They use them to locate food, water and even potential mates.
Basil disrupts that system thanks to its high concentration of volatile compounds, including methyl cinnamate, linalool, estragole and eugenol. In plants, these substances act as natural defenses against insects.
While most people find the scent of fresh basil pleasant, cockroaches experience it very differently. The aroma overwhelms their sensory receptors, making it difficult for them to detect food, garbage or even the pheromones released by other cockroaches. As a result, they’re more likely to leave the area in search of a more suitable environment.
How to use basil to help keep cockroaches away
To get the most out of basil’s repellent properties, simply placing a potted plant in the corner of your kitchen may not be enough, although it certainly won’t hurt.
Experts recommend placing fresh basil leaves in problem areas, including beneath the kitchen sink, behind major appliances and inside any cracks or crevices where cockroaches may enter. Replace the leaves every few days to ensure they retain their strong aroma.
Another option is to make a concentrated basil tea by steeping fresh leaves in hot water. Once cooled, pour the liquid into a spray bottle and apply it to dark corners and hard-to-reach areas beneath cabinets and furniture.
For outdoor spaces, you can add a few drops of pure basil essential oil to water in a spray bottle and use it around baseboards, entryways and door frames to help create an additional barrier against cockroaches.
