Neither Russia nor Venezuela: these are the two countries that have banned U.S. citizens
Two African countries respond with a ban on Americans after the expansion of U.S. immigration restrictions.

In an unusual move in international diplomacy, Mali and Burkina Faso announced at the end of this year a ban on entry for U.S. citizens, a measure that has raised concerns among travellers and foreign policy experts. The decision, which takes effect on December 31, 2025, is presented as a direct response to the recent expansion of immigration restrictions announced by the U.S. administration.
The foreign ministries of both countries, located in the heart of the Sahel, issued statements explaining that they are “applying equivalent measures” to those imposed by Washington, invoking the principle of reciprocity in their international relations. Their message is clear: if the United States closes its doors to Malian and Burkinabè nationals, they will do the same to Americans.
The measure comes amid growing tensions between several African governments and Washington, after the White House included Mali and Burkina Faso, among other countries, on its list of nations whose citizens face entry bans for security and immigration control reasons.
For U.S. citizens planning to visit the region, the decision complicates not only tourism and business plans, but also access to consular assistance in emergencies, as embassies have adjusted their operations and travel alerts in response to the deteriorating situation.
Although authorities in Bamako and Ouagadougou have stated that reciprocity is the legal basis for their response, analysts note a deeper issue: a perception of insufficient prior dialogue and an imbalance in international migration policies, particularly towards countries facing internal security challenges.
