Florida is one of the states with a higher minimum wage than the federal rate of $7.25 per hour. In September 2023, an amendment was approved by voters and the legislature, resulting in an increase in the reference salary. Another increase is expected for next year.

On November 3, 2020, voters in Florida approved a state constitutional amendment that mandates the annual increase of the state’s minimum wage until it reaches $15 per hour on September 30, 2026.

Additionally, the measure allows for a gradual increase to offset for inflation that is implemented on an annual basis.

How much will the minimum wage increase?

The minimum wage in Florida was $11 per hour until September 29. However, since September 30, the standard minimum hourly wage has increased to $12. On the other hand, the minimum wage for tipped employees has risen from $7.98 per hour to $8.98.

From September 30 of next year, the standard minimum wage will rise to $13 per hour and $9.98 for tipped employees.

By 2025, the standard minimum wage will increase to $14 per hour and $10.98 for tipped employees. In 2026, the minimum wage will rise to $15 per hour and $11.98 for tipped employees.

The amendment sets forth an hourly wage increase of $1 until it reaches $15 in 2026. It also mentions that future increases will be based on inflation to ensure that the purchasing power of workers is not affected. The wage of $15 per hour will remain in effect until December 31, 2027. From 2028 onwards, indexed increases based on inflation will be implemented.
