New minimum wage in San Francisco starting July 1: How much is the increase?
Several cities in California, including San Francisco, are preparing to raise the minimum wage on July 1. Find out how much the increase will be.
Thirty states, the District of Columbia, and several cities in the country have minimum wages higher than the federally mandated rate of $7.25 per hour.
Some states and some cities increase their base salaries each year, either in January or July. At the beginning of 2024, more than 20 states, including California, as well as several cities in the country increased their respective minimum wages, benefiting millions of workers.
In July, a couple of states and the District of Columbia are preparing to further increase their minimum wages. They will be followed by some cities, including several in California, such as San Francisco.

New minimum wage in San Francisco starting July 1: How much is the increase?
San Francisco employees, including part-time and temporary workers, must be paid no less than the minimum wage, which is currently $18.07 at the moment.
Starting July 1, 2024, the city’s minimum wage will increase to $18.67, becoming one of the highest in the entire state. This amount will be valid until June 30, 2025.
This increase is based on Article 1.4 of the San Francisco Labor and Employment Code, which establishes that the minimum wage rate will be adjusted every year based on the annual increase in the Consumer Price Index for urban wage earners and white-collar workers for the San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose, California metropolitan statistical area.
In 2014, San Francisco voters approved an initiative to raise the local minimum wage to $15 per hour by July 1, 2018, and subsequently adjust the wage rate each July 1 based on the annual increase in the Consumer Price Index.

What other California cities will increase their minimum wage in July?
In addition to San Francisco, other cities in the Golden State are expected to increase their minimum wage starting next month. The resulting amounts also exceed the state reference wage of $16 per hour. Here are the new rates in each area:
- Alameda: $17 per hour
- Berkeley: $18.67
- City of Los Angeles: $17.28
- Los Angeles County: $17.27
- Emeryville: $19.36
- Fremont: $17.30
- Milpitas: $17.70
- Pasadena: $17.50
- Santa Monica: $17.27
- West Hollywood: $20.86
