New outage affects AT&T and Verizon users: Why is it down and when will it work again?
Beginning Tuesday afternoon AT&T and Verizon customers began reporting phone service issues. The companies have acknowledged the situation.
Shortly after noon on Tuesday, AT&T and Verizon customers began reporting phone service issues. The complaints soared for both carriers peaking roughly four to five hours later according to Downdetector.
Both telecommunications companies issued statements acknowledging the problem but said that it was mainly occurring with calls between carriers. “The carriers are working as quickly as possible to diagnose and resolve the issue,” AT&T said in their statement.
Verizon said that for the most part its network is operating normally. However, issues were being experienced when calling or texting with customers served by another carrier by some customers, primarily in the Northeast and Midwest. The noticed added that they were “continuing to monitor the situation.”
What is behind the AT&T and Verizon outage and when will it work again?
Neither company clarified what was the source of the outage was. The number of new reports on Downdetector have been falling since around 5 pm ET.
This latest outage comes less than a week after Verizon customers reported service outages, some said that they had no cell service whatsoever. That incident affected primarily the Midwest and western states.
AT&T for its part had a major service outage in February prompting fears that the system was experiencing a cyberattack. In the end though the company blamed a technical error for the roughly 11-hour disruption to service.
“Based on our initial review, we believe that [the] outage was caused by the application and execution of an incorrect process used as we were expanding our network, not a cyber attack,” AT&T said. As an apology, the company offered a $5 credit to impacted customers “to help make it right.”
