As fires continue to blaze in California, the southeastern United States is preparing for another snowstorm, set to arrive just days after a separate storm system swept through the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic.

The National Weather Service (NWS) projects that a developing system will move out of Mexico and through the Gulf Coast on Thursday night, January 9. The storm is expected to track westward toward Florida before reaching the southern Mid-Atlantic coast over the weekend.

The states under a winter storm advisory

Several states across the U.S. are under alert as the new storm system approaches. Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Missouri have severe weather alerts in effect through Friday, January 10. Meanwhile, Tennessee, northern Alabama, and parts of Indiana and Kentucky will remain under warnings through Saturday.

The region expected to bear the brunt of the snowfall stretches from southeastern Oklahoma to western North Carolina, with accumulations of up to 8 inches forecast. Freezing rain and ice are likely in the southern Plains and lower Mississippi Valley, while the Tennessee Valley could experience some of its heaviest snowfall on record.

A winter storm is expected to bring heavy snow, freezing rain, & ice across the South over the next few days," posted the NWS Prediction Center on X, adding that some areas could see between four and eight inches of snow, which will make the roads very dangerous.
