New York changes driver’s license rules: Here’s what you need to know
Getting your license in New York has never been easier, but what criteria do you need to meet to obtain it?
Getting, and using, your driver’s license in New York has never been easier thanks to the implementation of the Mobile ID app, which has become an essential tool for drivers in the state. That is, of course, as long as you are up to speed on the criteria to get your license in the first place.
How to get a driver’s license in New York
To legally drive in New York, drivers must have a valid driver’s license, either in physical or digital form. As present, the current requirements set by the DMV to obtain the license are:
- Be at least 16 years old to apply for a learner’s permit
- Present identification documents such as a passport or consular ID
- Prove New York residency with utility bills or bank statements
- Pass the written exam on traffic rules and road signs
- Pass the practical driving exam in New York, which evaluates driving skills
- Pay the license fee, which ranges from $64.25 to $107.50, depending on age and document type
Since its launch in June 2024, over 200,000 New York residents have opted to use the Mobile ID app. Its acceptance at airports, stores and checkpoints has been growing, which means less paperwork, simpler admin, and enhanced user security and privacy.
What is Mobile ID?
The introduction of Mobile ID (MiD) was pushed for by New York Governor Kathy Hochul. The app, driven by the New York Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), aims to streamline administrative tasks and offer drivers a more convenient alternative to constantly carrying their driver’s license around.
In simple terms, it’s a driver’s license, learner’s permit or state ID on your mobile phone.
People can use MiD to provide identification information and validate their age, as they would with a paper license. But the app also makes airport security control faster (through integration with Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoints) and eliminates the risk of losing a paper license (although you could still misplace your phone, of course).
How to get Mobile ID on your phone
To get Mobile ID on your phone, download the official DMV app from Google Play or the App Store, register your phone number, and scan your physical driver’s license. Once this process is completed, the digital version will be activated for immediate use.
