On what date will SSI checks be deposited in June?

Millions of Social Security payments are sent to beneficiaries on specific dates each month but sometimes they have to be moved to another date.

The Social Security Administration sends out millions of payments to beneficiaries which are staggered across each month falling on specific dates or days. This not only makes it easier for the agency to organize the monumental task of disbursing over $120 billion in monthly benefits but also to help recipients budget.

That’s why it is vital for beneficiaries to know when they will see the money show up in their bank account. While the payments normally fall on the scheduled day or date, every now and then that may fall on a weekend or a holiday as will be the case with Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments corresponding to June.

On what date will SSI checks be deposited in June?

It’s worth noting that the Supplemental Security Income benefits are typically scheduled to be sent on the first day of each month. However, 1 June falls on a Saturday when no banking transactions are processed.

So, the SSI payments corresponding to June will be moved forward, hitting bank accounts on Friday 31 May. The next payment, the one corresponding to July 2024 will be sent as per the regularly scheduled day of the month, that is Monday 1 July.

This situation always happens for the SSI payments which correspond to January each year, as New Years Day is a public holiday, thus as is policy, the payment is moved forward to the first business day when banks are open. This year, SSI payments corresponding to September and December will also be moved forward.

Other Social Security payments that won’t be paid as scheduled

Recipients of Social Security who began claiming benefits from their contributions to the program prior to May 1997, or who receive both Social Security and SSI, receive their payments on the third of each month. Like with SSI payments being fixed to a specific date, there is a higher probability that it will fall on a non-business day when banks are closed and thus payments have to be moved forward. This was the case in 2024 for the payments corresponding to February and March and will be so again for those for August and November.

It’s less common for this to happen to other Social Security payments for retirees, the disabled or survivors. Those benefits are sent on the second, third or fourth Wednesday each month depending on the date of birth during a month.

This is because most of the eleven US holidays fall on either a Monday or a Friday, and Thanksgiving is always the fourth Thursday of November. However, five of them are tied to specific dates, New Years, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Veterans Day and Christmas.

This year, Juneteenth 2024 falls on Wednesday 19 June. So, those Social Security recipients born between the 11th and 20th of a given month, who typically receive their payment on the third Wednesday of each month, will instead see their check arrive on Tuesday 18 June.
