According to CNN, the Italian architecture firm Lazzarini Design Studio has unveiled the design for a massive turtle-shaped vessel with extended wings. The ship is so large that designers say it can’t be classified as a luxury yacht, but rather as a “terayacht.” The project is called Pangeos, a name inspired by Pangaea, the prehistoric supercontinent that once included nearly all of Earth’s landmass.

The Italian firm claims the structure will be large enough to host shopping malls, swimming pools, hotels, gardens, and have the capacity to carry up to 60,000 passengers.

The largest yacht in history

The projected dimensions are staggering: 550 meters in length and up to 610 meters in beam at certain points. To build it, a shipyard measuring 600 by 650 meters would be required, along with dredging of one square kilometer of sea with a circular barrier.

Lazzarini states that this will be the largest ship ever constructed, and that Saudi Arabia is the ideal location to begin construction.

The designers estimate the cost of the project at around €8 billion. Construction is not expected to begin before 2025, and the build will take approximately eight years to complete. Funding will be raised through NFTs, by selling “Unreal Estates” that allow interested buyers to purchase virtual tickets, rooms, and even homes aboard a metaverse version of the yacht.

A ship with cutting-edge luxury technology

Besides being the largest mobile vessel ever built, Pangeos will feature some of the most advanced technological luxuries.

It will include a private marina within the structure, located beneath the yacht. A mini-port will run through the center, allowing travelers to dock smaller boats mid-voyage. The deck layout will also provide access to both interior and exterior views, thanks to large sliding glass windows.

As if that weren’t enough, the terayacht will be equipped with hydrofoil technology—an underwater wing that lifts the vessel above the water’s surface, allowing it to travel at high speeds. It will be powered by three hydrogen-based engines.

“It’s worth remembering that in 1964, the shipbuilding industry was already capable of building vessels of this scale,” the Lazzarini design group concluded.
