A city in Los Angeles has announced that eligible people can start applying for a new program intended to help those with financial problems stemming from the covid-19 pandemic.

The City of El Monte launched its new Guaranteed Income Program which will provide cash assistance with no strings attached to 125 eligible residents. Approved participants can receive a monthly payment of $500 for 12 months through a debit card (EBT) that the city will issue.

Each month, the city will automatically deposit the money to the debit card. The program will have a duration of one year, which means that people who are approved will receive a total of $6,000 and they will not have to pay taxes at the end of the year. Recipients can pay for goods and services anywhere debit cards are accepted.

Under the rules of this new program, there are no work requirements to participate, and recipients can also use the money however they like. The idea is that this income is a supplement for people who are having financial difficulties due to the pandemic.

Those applying for this new program will need to submit various forms and documentation. This includes proof of El Monte residency, school registration forms for each child living in your household, proof of income, a government-issued ID, and a form listing all public assistance programs in which you are currently enrolled.

For more information, visit the City of El Monte’s website on the new guaranteed income program or check out the FAQ page. Only 125 people will be randomly selected from all applicants. The deadline to apply is April 15, 2023 and you can apply online, in person or by mail.

What are the requirements?

  1. Be a resident of the City of El Monte

  3. Have children below the age of 18 living in your home
