Payments of up to $1,000 for seniors: who qualifies and how to apply?

Seniors in Maryland may be eligible to receive up to $1,000 through property tax bill credits. Find out who qualifies and how to apply for the money.

Payments of up to $1,000 for seniors: how to apply?

Seniors in Maryland may be eligible to receive up to $1,000 from the Homeowner Property Tax Credit Program.

This is a program that allows credits against the property tax bill if property taxes exceed a set percentage of a person's gross income. In other words, it sets a cap on the amount of property taxes any homeowner must pay based on their income.

Payments of up to $1,000 for seniors: who qualifies and how to apply?

To qualify, renters must be over the age of 60, 100 percent disabled, or under the age of 60 with a dependent under the age of 18 living with them, and not have received federal or state housing subsidies during the previous year.

Homeowners must have net worth less than $200,000, not including their home, and combined household income less than $60,000. There is no age limit to apply for the Homeowner Property Tax Credit.

Generally speaking, eligibility for the tax credit will be based on all money received by the applicant's household in a given year, so you must report all income for the homeowner, his/her spouse, and all other household occupants, unless they are dependents or paying rent or room and board. Income from all sources must be declared.

How to claim the money?

Homeowners must apply online or in person. Individuals have until October 1 to apply. Those who file by that date will receive any credit due in the form of a revised tax bill.

Applicants applying after April 15 are encouraged to not delay paying their property tax bill until they receive the credit if they want to receive the early payment discount offered in some subdivisions.

The local government will issue a refund check if the tax bill was paid before the tax credit was granted.
