In a phenomenon that has surprised citizens and experts alike, the Al Nafud desert in Saudi Arabia’s Al Jawf province experienced its first documented snowfall in recent history.

Snow falls in Saudi desert

This unusual event was caused by a low-pressure system that formed over the Arabian Sea, bringing with it a mix of humid and warm air, triggering a series of thunderstorms, hail, and, ultimately, snow in this typically arid and hot region, according to the Saudi National Center for Meteorology.

The snowfall in Al Nafud has generated widespread astonishment, as this area usually experiences extremely high temperatures, exceeding 50 degrees Celsius in summer. In November, temperatures typically hover around 17 degrees, with almost no precipitation.

In fact, the Al Jawf province receives only about 120 millimeters of rain annually, highlighting the rarity of this recent meteorological event.

The unusual atmospheric conditions have sparked debates among scientists and specialists, who suggest that such extreme events may be linked to climate change. According to Newsweek, meteorological experts claim that global warming is causing unpredictable shifts in weather patterns across various regions, potentially making phenomena like this more frequent.

The Saudi Meteorological Center has warned that storms and rainfall may persist in the coming days, potentially bringing further surprises to a region that has long been a symbol of extreme heat and dryness.
