Pharmacist on tanning: “When we’re tanned, we look more attractive for two reasons, neither of which is related to health”

People tend to link a sun-kissed glow with health and beauty, but the reasons are rooted in culture and perception, not wellness.

Content about health is among the most popular topics on social media. Tips, explanations, and insights get huge engagement, and one of the most-followed voices in this space is Guille, known as “the angry pharmacist.” In one of his latest videos, he explained the surprising reasons why tanned skin is often seen as more attractive.

Optical illusion and cultural history

“Why do we look more attractive when we’re tanned?” Guille asks. He explains that there are two completely different reasons, and neither has anything to do with being healthy.

The first is simple: it’s an optical effect. Darker tones hide imperfections more effectively, making the skin look smoother and more uniform, he says.

The second reason is sociocultural. Centuries ago, pale skin was a symbol of privilege, meaning a person didn’t have to work outdoors. Guille points out historical examples, from the idea of “blue blood” in Europe to cultures in Asia where fairness is still considered the beauty standard. On the flip side, in some countries a tan became a status symbol, showing someone could afford vacations and had the luxury of spending time in the sun.

We confuse health with fashion

Ultimately, Guille concludes, people often mistake what’s fashionable for what’s healthy. “Attractiveness is a trend society has imposed on us,” he says.
