It's not a masterpiece, but it's Spielberg. Add to that the fact that it comes from winning the Toronto Film Festival and that it's semi-autobiographical... The king of the blockbuster who's cool when he gets serious.

Germany

Netflix won't stop until they take the big Oscar. Now they attempt it with the vision of a young German soldier in the Great War. In 1930, a first version of it was made, and that did win.

The central character may be a donkey, but this is a film of undoubted cinematic beauty. Its nomination is also a recognition of the career of its 84-year-old director, Jerzy Skolimowski.

ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT

Also nominated for Best Picture, this is the film to beat. Germany hasn’t won Best International Feature since 2007, for the sublime The Lives of Others. This would be the fourth time the country has scooped the award.
