Meteorologists at the National Weather Service (NWS) are warning Americans to get ready for a significant change in the weather across much of the country. A series of Artic outbreaks are forecast to arrive over the next couple of weeks plunging temperatures to their lowest level of the season.

“Below freezing temperatures are possible as far south as the Gulf Coast and much of the Florida Peninsula,” said the NWS. The potential for heavy snow is predicted to accompany the cold air possibly “leading to significant travel disruptions.”

Artic outbreaks: the parts of the US forecast to get the coldest air and snowstorms

The first Artic outbreak is forecast to come shortly after New Year’s. This mass of cold air may produce a wintry mix in the Northeast and in the Appalachians. Areas down wind of the Great Lakes and parts of West Viriginia could see heavy snow.

The second Artic outbreak, or polar vortex, is forecast to arrive between January 7 and 13, bring the coldest air of the season to date. “Dangerous wind chills are likely across many areas of the Southeast,” warns the NWS.

“Below freezing temperatures are possible as far south as the Gulf Coast and much of the Florida Peninsula,” states the meteorological agency. Temperatures may drop to 25ºF to 35ºF below average for this time of year.

The parts of the Southern Plains and Southeast could see frozen precipitation. Meanwhile, there is the potential for heavy snow for much of the Appalachians, Ohio Valley, Mid-Atlantic, Great Lakes and Northeast. Heavy lake effect snow is likely for areas downwind of the Great Lakes.
