President Joe Biden announced earlier this evening that he would step down as the Democratic candidate in the 2024 presidential race. While Biden had been called upon to do so by voters, Democratic party members, and donors, he had long insisted he’d stay in the race against Republican nominee Donald Trump.

After telling reporters he’s reconsider that decision were the polls to show he could not win or if a medical issue presented itself, he’s now officially dropped out of the race and endorsed vice president Kamala Harris as the new Democratic nominee.

Reactions to the announcement have been mixed, with many showing an outpouring of support for Biden’s decision, calling it selfless and noting that he has put the country first, including Senators Chuck Schumer and Bernie Sanders.

Mike Johnson, the 56th speaker of the United States House of Representatives, however, criticized the democratic process, saying that Biden was “forced out” by members of his own party.

Then, of course, there was Donald Trump’s own reaction, which was to say that Biden was never fit to run in the first place.
