Millions of coins circulate daily in the United States, and some of them could be more valuable than you’d expect. The vast majority are exchanged at face value, while a small portion can be a lot more valuable and sell for thousands, tens of thousands, or even millions of dollars due to their rarity. Such is the case of the 25-cent Bicentennials.

These coins, minted in 1976, commemorate 200 years of the Independence of the United States. The Bicentennial was celebrated on Sunday, July 4, 1976 and celebrated the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. Due to their rarity and certain printing errors, some of these coins can be worth up to $40 million.

The value of collectible coins depends on several factors including its rarity and condition, the demand for a specific specimen, and its historical significance. These quarters are both rare and have a place in history, qualities which have made it desired by collectors.

According to an article in El Diario NY, some 25-cent Bicentennials have sold for more than $40 million at auctions. Among these specimens, the 1976-D coins minted in Denver stand out. According to the report, these are distinguished by an error that is visible near the chest of the eagle, classifying them as “Brand D variety.”

There are also 25-cent bicentennials with “double die on the obverse”; which means that they have a duplicate in the printing, either in the date and or in the letters. These errors have raised the coins’ value by millions of dollars.
