If you have some loose change lying around, you might want to take a closer look. You might have one of those rare quarters that can be worth up to $18,000.
Millions of coins and bills circulate in the United States every day. The vast majority are generally only worth their face value; that is, one-cent coins are usually worth one cent, and so on. However, some pieces can sell for thousands of dollars to collectors.
The value of a coin or bill is determined based on three main factors: rarity, the condition/grade of the coin or bill, and market conditions; that is, demand, according to the website US First Exchange.
The combination of these three factors determines whether a coin or bill is worth more or less money, as is the case with a quarter that has sold for just over $18,000.

The 25 cent coin that is worth up to $18,000
The well-known Washington quarter was designed by John Flanagan in the early 1930s, replacing the series in 1932, according to the United States Mint.
There are several of these coins that are worth more than their face value, such as the 1962, with the 1962 D being one of those that has sold for the most money. Most of the 127,554,756 coins issued with the D mintmark, in pieces struck in Denver, were put into circulation and today you can buy one for about $6.
However, uncirculated pieces in lower ranges cost between $10 and $85, while those at MS 67 on the coin grading scale are the rarest and most expensive.
Its estimated price ranges between $3,000 and $8,750. Currently, the most expensive 1962 D coin is grade MS 67, sold in 2012 at Heritage Auctions for $18,400, according to the Professional Coin Grading Service.

Characteristics of the quarter that is worth thousands of dollars
The obverse features the portrait of George Washington. You can see the word LIBERTY above the President and the phrase IN GOD WE TRUST in front of his neck. The simple design also includes the date.
Meanwhile, the reverse includes an American eagle in the center with olive branches placed under its wings. You can also see the D mintmark below the center of the branch.
Reverse inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA with E PLURIBUS UNUM below. The coin denomination, QUARTER DOLLAR, can be found at the bottom of the coin.
