Return of a McDonald’s favorite retired in 2020: “Breakfast is not just a meal; it’s a cornerstone of our brand”

As part of its Egg McMuffin 50th-anniversary celebrations, the fast-food chain has big news for fans of another breakfast favorite.

Update:

As McDonald’s celebrates a half-century of its classic Egg McMuffin breakfast sandwich, the American fast-food chain has announced big news for lovers of another, less ubiquitous fan favorite.

Previously, McDonald’s sold its bagel sandwiches only at limited locations in the U.S.; now, however, the restaurant is rolling them out across the hole country.

Bagel bonzanza across the States

“In honor of this golden [Egg McMuffin] anniversary, the Golden Arches are doubling down on breakfast - offering fans even more reasons to wake up with McDonald’s and save on their favorites,” the company said in a statement last week, adding: “Bagel sandwiches are now nationwide: For the first time ever, McDonald’s renowned bagel sandwiches are now available across the U.S.

“So, whether you love the classic Bacon, Egg & Cheese; Sausage, Egg & Cheese; or the iconic Steak, Egg & Cheese, McDonald’s has you covered, no matter where you are.”

Joe Erlinger, the president of McDonald’s USA, added: “At McDonald’s, breakfast isn’t just a meal; it’s a cherished tradition and cornerstone of our brand. Every morning when we open our doors, we are a breakfast restaurant.”

Bagels' passionate McDonald’s following

Having sold bagels only at certain American restaurants, McDonald’s stopped offering them altogether in 2020, before reintroducing them in some locations last year.

But despite only being intermittently purchasable until now, McDonald’s bagels have enjoyed something of a cult following in the U.S., according to Southern Living’s Abigail Wilt. “The sandwiches were only available at participating McDonald’s locations across the country, but had garnered a passionate base,” Wilt says.

“In fact, fans went so far as to create a public spreadsheet of where Bagel Sandwiches could be found across the country.”

An egg-cellent deal?

While we should highlight the potential adverse health effects of eating fast food regularly, diners who choose to start their day at McDonald’s will benefit not only from an expanded breakfast menu, but also the company’s pledge not to introduce an egg surcharge.

Amid the rising cost of eggs in the U.S., other restaurants in America have begun upping their prices for egg orders.

For example, the popular chain Waffle House, which is present in 25 states across the U.S., announced in early February that it will be charging its customers an additional 50 cents per egg.

You definitely WON’T see McDonald’s USA issuing surcharges on eggs,” the McDonald’s North America chief impact officer, Michael Gonda, said in a recent LinkedIn post.
