Returning a book borrowed in 1943: “I hope there is no late fee for it”
The San Antonio Public Library recouped one of its books that was a little more than overdue, having been checked out over eight decades ago.

The San Antonio Public Library announced that it has finally gotten back one of its books that was checked out on 30 July 1943 and was supposed to be returned 28 days later. An anonymous person in Oregon mailed the book with a letter inside explaining how the events conspired to result in its being returned so late.
The person believes that their grandmother checked out ‘Your Child, His Family, and Friends’ by Frances Bruce Strain before being transferred to work at the US Embassy in Mexico City. The person came across the tome while sifting through their father’s possessions after he passed away.
“I hope there is no late fee for it”
The San Antonio Public Library took advantage of the incident to raise awareness amongst the public about their late fee charge for overdue books. The institution explained in a press release that the person joked about the extended borrow, writing: “I hope there is no late fee for it because Grandma won’t be able to pay for it anymore.”
Fortunately, the library will not be seeking to collect the 3 cent per day fine as the San Antonio Public Library “eliminated overdue fines in 2021 to break down financial barriers to accessing library services and resources.” Had that not been the case, the penalty would have added up to almost $900 according to calculations by the Associated Press.
Eight-decade overdue book will be sold to raise money for public library system
The San Antonio Public Library also informed that the book will be on display in the lobby at the central library throughout August. The book, which was received in good condition, will be donated to the Friends of San Antonio Public Library once removed from display.
After which it will be put on sale in the Book Cellar used bookstore in the basement at Central Library and the proceeds will benefit the public institution.
